Take a Shortcut to Europe: European Union Embassies’ Open House & European Month of Culture

Experience the best of European culture without the jet lag!

The European Month of Culture (EUMC) brings the best of European culture to Washington, D.C., in May, including the annual flagship EU Open House event with the 28 European Union Embassies and the European Union Delegation opening their doors to the public.

Highlighting the Mayor of Washington DC’s declaration of May as International Cultural Awareness Month, EUMC offers everything from fashion to jazz ensembles, literary evenings to cutting edge European films, language classes, photography exhibits, lectures, art exhibits and workshops. Offered by the 28 European Union member states and the EU Delegation, events will be held across the city including at the National Gallery of Art, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, and EU Embassies. Most events are free.

The EU Open House on May 13 gives visitors a rare look inside the embassies and the opportunity to experience the cultural heritage and national traditions of the 28 EU member states.  New this year, visitors can participate in a photo competition where five lucky winners will walk away with ultimate EU Swag Bags of gifts from across the ocean.

These celebrations are in honour of Europe Day, the day in 1950 when French Foreign Minister, Robert Schuman, signed the declaration that ultimately led to the formation of the EU.  In addition, this year marks three other important anniversaries:  the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome which helped establish the EU, the 70th anniversary of the Marshall Plan providing post-war aid to Europe, and the 65th anniversary of EU-US diplomatic relations.

“As we open the doors to our embassies and share our cultures, we celebrate what a diverse group of countries have achieved by uniting for the common good,” said Ambassador David O’Sullivan, Head of the EU Delegation to the United States. “And we are particularly happy to share this celebration with our American friends on what happens to be the 65th year of EU-US diplomatic relations. The US was the first country to recognize the EU and we are grateful for the steadfast support we have received ever since.”
