EU Delegation to the USA: Cultural Offerings

Conversations in cultureThe European Union’s Delegation to the United States in Washington, DC, has sponsored, participated in, facilitated, and/or coordinated with EU Member States to develop cultural programs that feature Europe and its Member States doing some of what they do best. To this end, the Delegation also works closely with the European-American Cultural Foundation (EACF) and the European Union National Institutes of Culture (EUNIC).

EU Embassies Open House. Each year on the Saturday closest to May 9, EU Member State embassies and the EU Delegation in Washington, DC, open their doors to the public and showcase their finest, offering an insider’s view of the embassy, its culture, its people, its food, and its “ways”.

European Month of Culture. This increasingly popular month of diverse cultural events in the DC metro area encompasses activities ranging from dance to theater to concerts, and art exhibits and lectures. Events in the DC metro area—mostly free of charge—take place at exceptional venues including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the National Gallery of Art, and the U.S. Library of Congress—each representing some of the capital’s most iconic settings for creative cultural expression.

Conversations in Culture. This mostly monthly series of free programs is offered from September through June at the EU Delegation. Programs span an array of performances, from mime, to dance, to travel lectures, to culinary demonstrations, to music, and more, with content typically developed in consultation with EU member countries.

European Union Film Showcase. Each year since 1987, the American Film Institute (AFI) and the EU Delegation have combined efforts to present the very best in contemporary European cinema. Typically scheduled over two to three weeks in December, the program features award-winning movies and box office hits prominently among the screenings.

Kids’ Euro Festival. Since 2007, this autumn festival presents some of Europe’s most talented children’s entertainers during two weeks of free activities throughout the DC metro area. Performances, concerts, workshops, movies, storytelling, puppetry, dance, magic, and cinema are featured thanks to the combined efforts of the 28 EU Member States, the EU Delegation, and the European-American Cultural Foundation, in collaboration with more than 30 cultural institutions in the Washington, DC area.

Other Events. In addition to the regular events, a number of ad hoc events occur throughout the year, including rotating art exhibits, national day celebrations, marking milestones, such as Croatia’s accession to the EU.
