The Schuman Challenge

Congratulations to Gabriele C. Unruh, Iana Pervazova and Alex Psilakis from American University School of International Service on winning the 2017 Schuman Challenge Championship! Congratulations also to Michael Crockett, Mohika Nagpal, Evan Drukker-Schardl from Johns Hopkins University on reaching the championship round and to Georgetown University on receiving honorable mention!

As the EU celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Rome Treaties, and the EU and US celebrated the 70th anniversary of the Marshall Plan, the 2017 Schuman Challenge was organized to promote rigorous academic dialogue on the future of the transatlantic partnership. During the competition students scrutinized the opportunities and challenges for effective transatlantic implementation of the EU’s Global Strategy.  This included working with faculty mentors to research and develop policy positions on transatlantic implementation of the EU’s Global Strategy as well as presenting and defending these positions before a panel of topic experts recruited by the EU Delegation.

EU Ambassador to the United States David O’Sullivan hosted and served as chair for the Schuman Challenge Championship Round between American University and Johns Hopkins University. Georgetown University received honorable mention.  Other participating schools included Patrick Henry College, The George Washington University, and the United States Naval Academy. After the championship round, participants and observers enjoyed the new exhibition of the EU Delegation to the U.S. on 65 years of EU-US diplomatic relations.
